The Flintstones premieres. A situational comedy aimed at adults, episodes feature taboo topics such as suicide, infertility, and is the first animated television program to show a married couple sharing a bed.
The Flintstones started life as a hip, adults-only show. The first two seasons were even sponsored by Winston cigarettes. Episodes ended with an integrated ad featuring the main characters smoking during the closing credits. It wasn't until Fred and Wilma had baby Pebbles in 1963 that the show started to skew younger.
